Two years ago we met Señora Yadira (photo below @ center) who is in charge of the main island in our current anchorage. She is a Kuna who has lived in the States (OH, FL) for decades and her family is from Nargana.
Like many islands, a family of Kunas share in the maintenance and coconut harvest and rotate residency. This year… whale bones still present and bleaching in the sun... Yadira’s cousin Arcides is the man in charge. Also, like many islands they have begun to charge fees for tourists who visit. Despite his tough exterior, he seems to enjoy our company!
In the past, we used to trade cell-phone charging and minor supplies with Arcides in place of our tourist fee, so we could have unlimited use of the island for yoga each morning. There is now a solar panel and generator running electricity for an expanded hut and there is even a bathroom/shower, so we negotiated a one time $3 per person fee for yoga this time around.
As usual, a small fee is worth the price to be in paradise. We have a really nice group of yogistas who are dedicated to coming together each morning for our yoga time in almost all weather conditions. It remains the primo yoga spot of all time and brings back fond memories of all of the other cruisers with whom we’ve shared a practice here.
