Old Point Comfort

Comfort and some sleep was just what we wanted after sailing up the coast from Florida to Virgina.  We had an anchorage all to ourselves between the Hampton Bridge Tunnel and the Old Point Comfort marina, holding solid on the second set after hooking a piece of scrap metal, cloth and netting.  This is the second time our anchor has been fouled recently ~ kinda miss that clear water!

College roomie Cindy & her husband David met us at the new marina restaurant for a dinner that was tasty, but hard to eat in-between all of our talking & laughing.  We had a lot of catching up to do!!

On this peninsula sits Fort Monroe ~ recently open to the public in 2011 ~ where we spent a leisurely afternoon strolling the grounds.

There is a public beach and fishing pier where fishery tagging was taking place.  The point is a lovely place to spend an afternoon

It’d been a while since I’d seen the brick architectural style of my childhood.  There is a definitely nostalgic beauty to it in the bright sunlight.

The Fort appeared to be in use during Revolutionary, Civil and World Wars.  There were familiar batteries that reminded us of our Fort Sherman, Panama hikes.

Plus, impressive cannon technologies of the day, like this 15 inch Lincoln Gun that hurls a 300 pound shot up to 4 miles.  This is the closest you get to the pose that Mark was advocating for…  pop-culture ideals be damned ~ haha.

The coolest part of Fort Monroe ~ besides the old trees & base housing turning residential ~ was the pet walk all along the perimeter of the outer wall.  A pet cemetery dating back almost a century.  The tombstones tell a story of beloved companions of service families lined up in a halo of yellow grass, bestowed by their present-day decedents.
