The Big City

Two things stood out when first driving into Guatemala City that seemed unique to most cities over 2 million population.  First, there are little to no high-rise buildings.  This makes sense when you consider the heightened earthquake activity for this area.  Second, there is virtually no honking except as a courtesy pass.  The driving here, including buses & taxis, was consistently civil and organized for so large a city.

The most impressive buildings downtown inevitably turned out to be government offices.

The police station, post office and other bureaus are colorful and ornate.

There were a lot of restaurants where we stayed in Zone 10, including our new favorite panaderia café San Martin!  We highly approved of breakfasts, lunches and dinners there.  And did you know that McD's delivers?  What a brilliant idea!

During our return trip we had an afternoon free and visited the nearby zoo.

It was very well done ~ you felt quite close and out in the open to so large of animals ~ plus they had an endless aviary for a good bird fix.

We also ran into a parade complete with school bands and to our surprise, lots of clowns.  Their make-up was well-done and they were interactive in a very personable way.

Jeannie and Lenny had gotten head colds by the end of our trip, but I'm sure the clowns cheered them up!

We all had fun with it... especially when Elvis gave me a rose, stared into my eyes &  stole my heart (note his guitar!).

What a fun trip with great people!

Five days after our vacation, we just about finished unpacking in order to repack for our next trip.

Now, here we are heading back to the big city for an overnight stay before flying out in the morning to States.
