We left two free days of our trip open so that we could stay somewhere new along the way. San Marcos was the place we chose to take a vacation from our vacation!
It is a laid-back town of a few thousand residents, a mix of ex-pats and locals with a few missionaries & hippies thrown-in.
There are meditation gardens and all things holistic around every corner.
Much to our entertainment, we read signs about Astral Traveling where you can be transported to inter-dimensional space and "it really works!".

There are no roads along the lake, just foot paths.
This lower section connects to a main road up the hill, where you will find a tiny town center with stores, a basketball court, church, small park and amphitheater.

We picked an enchanting place to stay at the Bosque Encantado, where we filled up the only three rooms in the forest.
It was muy tranquilo after a busy week of travel....

We literally got to sit back, smell the flowers and watch a monarch caterpillar turn into a chrysalis right before our eyes.

In contrast to Panajachel, every meal we had here was excellent, especially breakfast and lunches from panqueques to Spanish omelets to falafel sandwiches to eggplant sandwiches.
Checking out other places along the paths in San Marcos, we were impressed with the breakfast and gardens at Shumann, the french cuisine and room rates at el Tul y Sol, the rooms built into the side of rocks and trees at Aacculax/Luxury Apts, the coffee at Moonfish café.
The best find was the Blind Lemon restaurant, where Carlos greeted us warmly and invited us back for a tasty dinner.
Carlos is an excellent blues guitar player (also teaches guitar). We had a private concert over dinner to enjoy his style of blues on a ringing, resonator guitar and a classic Washburn guitar.
