Schools

One of my cameras is getting more use than the others…  I have to remember to take more above water pictures this month!  Fortunately, Sharda took her camera along to a few gatherings among friends of old & new.

Sometimes I remember to take pictures from the water of above water action, like these Kunas gathering fruit from their finca…

...would love to buy some of those bananas but no money in the wetsuit!

But most of the action is still happening underwater.  We anchored in a new spot (for us) in 6 feet of sand with our own personal reef right off the stern in lovely azure waters.  These shallow reefs are a nursery for juvenile fish and mollusks.

Parrotfish are omnipresent around the shallows, getting a cleaning, munching on the corals and making sand…  The reef squid have been very cooperative, posing for the camera recently!

There are also reef walls surrounding the anchorage, keeping it nice and calm.  All were explored.

Snorkeling in a nearby deep water cut, schools of spadefish surrounded me on each dive - they must be curious or looking for scraps?

A few fish sneaking in behind them looked a bit different... and then I noticed another school of dog snapper.

There were well over 50 fish in each school, but the dogs hovered in the distance.

There is always one brave soul, we’ll call him “Scout”, who comes over for a closer look at the strange creature in a wetsuit with big eyes!

There are always reef friends on the walls or in caves to find as I hover over them to snap a few pictures.

Inevitably as I go up for a breath, over my shoulder sits a curious barracuda who might be looking for the catch of the day?!

They get pretty big (4-5 feet) and so are their teeth, so still take some getting used to…

Recently, there are scrawled filefish everywhere and even schools of them have been seen ~ most likely spawning.

They flash pretty colors for camouflage and sometimes they are hard to spot for a relatively large fish
